9:00-10:00 a.m. Electronics for Guitars Hilton, Level 4, Capistrano
present the inner workings of the RDM protocol and how it relates to real-world installation practices. 2:00-6:00 p.m. Rigging Math Eric Rouse of Entertainment Project Services Hilton San Clemente Many riggers fear the math that’s some- times required to calculate loads for their rigging systems. This session will delve into this math and concepts that riggers use to determine loads on en- tertainment structures. The session will calculate point loads and uniform loads and look at how they create different re- actions on structures. Additionally, it will discuss the concepts used to determine bridle lengths and learn how to calcu- late load distribution and line tension. 2:00-3:00 p.m. Stress & Resilience on Tour Panel Hilton, Level 4, Capistrano It’s well known that life on the road is physically exhausting, and it’s now more widely accepted that it’s also emotion- ally and mentally challenging. Learn about which factors exacerbate or con- tribute to cumulative stress and men- tal health problems, and who is most at risk. Music Industry Therapist Collective (MITC)’s clinicians examine myths, risk factors and stressors commonly found in music. This panel will take attendees on a whistle-stop tour of the circadian rhythm and survival mode, and out- line the impact of chronic stress on the mind, brain and body.
This session covers the theory behind electric guitars and amplifiers and ex- plores the tools and techniques involved in guitar electronics. Discover tech- niques for troubleshooting and repair, wiring basics and modifications that can change the tone of a tune. 10:00-11:00 a.m. Surviving Electric Instruments & Microphones on the Stage Hilton, Level 4, Capistrano There is a long list of musicians who have experienced microphone acci- dents, some of whom survived and some who didn’t. What causes these accidents and, more importantly, how can we prevent them in the future? Join this session to find out more about how to keep things from going wrong with microphones, amplifiers, guitars and electricity. All levels of knowledge and experience are welcome. 11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Advanced Show Networking Kevin Loewen of Pathway Connectivity Hilton, Level 4, Capistrano Ethernet networks are now common in venues across the entertainment in- dustry. This session will help demystify the alphabet soup of technologies and give attendees the information they need to design and operate increas- ingly complex networks. Topics covered will include: VLANs, Multicast traffic and IGMP, Spanning Tree and Redundant Ring protocols, security concerns, and troubleshooting tips. 12:00-1:00 p.m. Rigging Standards for the Everyday User Tyler DeLong of DeLong Rigging Solutions Hilton, Level 4, Capistrano There are a lot of standards, codes and rules to theatrical rigging systems. To the everyday user, it may seem like a monu- mental task to dig through the moun- tains of documents to find the pertinent information. In this session, Tyler DeLong will discuss where to find the pertinent standards, how some standards overlap and, most importantly, peek into how to interpret the standards. 1:00-2:00 p.m. RDM Doesn’t Work! (If it’s Poorly Installed) Milton Davis of Doug Fleenor Design Hilton, Level 4, Capistrano This session focuses on the Remote Device Management (RDM) protocol. In some lighting installations, RDM has been blamed for causing a wide range of problems ranging from flashing lights to complete failure. While it’s easy to blame RDM, the actual cause of the problems is typically related to installa- tion practices, cabling, and, in some cas- es, poor implementation of the protocol by the manufacturer.
